There is nothing quite like the majestic artistry of Cirque du Soleil. I’ve been to two shows in the last five years and they are nothing less than amazing. Story, music, and acrobatics come together in one amazing experience.

Amaluna, the current traveling tent show, brings the art of Cirque du Soleil to a city near you. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Amaluna is a beautiful story about an island governed by a beautiful goddess.

“Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon.

Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honours femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.”

Cirque du Soleil’s stories and routines change every year and Amaluna will only be showing for a short period in Miami, so be sure to see it while you can!

Tips for those who have children with sensory issues:
-Bring lightly-tinted sunglasses for your child to wear. Not only will they fit right in with the population of Miami, but they will have something ready to dim the lights should they get too loud.

-The music in Amaluna is fantastic, but it may be too loud for sensitive ears. Bring some small ear muffs or to be more discreet, a pair of small or in-ear headphones to help damper the noise.

-The death-defying acrobatics may cause anxiety in some children. We deal with the anxiety by giving our child a “safety bag”, in it are mints, scented wipes, a small ball to squeeze, and scented diaper disposal bags in case the worst happens. Our hope is that by stimulating positive senses the focus on the negative ones is diminished.
