I’ve written before about our brief brush with homelessness, how some bad decisions and bad luck left the 7 of us living in the spare bedroom in my in-law’s house. Today I’m stepping back and sharing my gratitude by sharing some of the lessons we learned during this ordeal.
It was hard to see any good at the time but I can now say I am thankful. Even though this happened years ago Jason & I are just now starting to become comfortable talking about it, something like this takes a long time to recover from emotionally. We both agreed that while the situation was awful we emerged better, stronger and happier.
I’ll be exploring these lessons more in the future, but for now I present to you the top 7 lessons I learned when we were homeless:
1. An emergency fund is a must, even a small one.
2. It’s ok to ask for help (& money does not necessarily equal help.)
3. We have some really awesome friends (and family) who believed in us through it all.
4. We are content with so much less than we thought we wanted.
5. There is more good in the world than there is bad.
6. Things turn around eventually if you just hang in there long enough.
7. When things do turn around you’ll feel a need, almost a compulsion, to help others who are facing the same thing.
Couldn’t agree more with all 7 points! Been there, too, and should write a book. Being truly without makes one so grateful for what little you do have. Our time of trail also made us stronger Christians. We simply didn’t think that was possible because we thought we were “good” people. Oops. Thank you for your openess and honesty.
good points to remember during any financial or life altering event! ….so glad you are on the other side reflecting back :)
